Investment Option: Endowment for Excellence in Technology

Goal: To create innovative solutions for regional economic development and provide a technically skilled workforce in the Midlands

Strategy: Midlands Technical College will establish an endowment for maintaining collegewide technological excellence through the establishment and maintenance of state-of-the-art training laboratories. This endowment will enhance the region’s ability to train the skilled high-technology workers needed by area employers. Midlands Technical College is currently the Central Midlands’ primary supplier of applied information technology, advanced manufacturing, health sciences and electronic assembly employees. The college’s new Center of Excellence for Technology Training will deliver relevant education that is highly accessible, flexible and able to meet the changing needs of the marketplace. The endowment for excellence in technology will support this outstanding, interactive training site. This smart facility will be equipped to handle the high volume, high skills and flexible education necessary to advance the careers of individuals and meet the demands of industry. The MTC Center of Excellence for Technology Training is adjacent to the Carolina Research Park in Northeast Columbia and will be operational in 2002.

  • Faculty will be able to improve their teaching techniques with appropriate instructional equipment designed to accommodate diverse student abilities.


 

Investment Option: Endowment for Teaching Excellence

Goal: To educate and train a world-class workforce to ensure community competitiveness Investment Strategy: Midlands Technical College will acquire resources specifically designated for the purpose of attracting, retaining and retraining outstanding faculty.  The college will establish a $2 million endowment to provide support of teaching excellence. The funds will be used to recruit and retain outstanding faculty in rapidly evolving high-technology areas. 

Benefits:

  • Endowed faculty chairs will attract and retain faculty in high-demand fields, resulting in the highest level of relevant education and training for MTC students.

  • Programs and services will be improved to better serve students seeking the highly technical skills necessary for immediate job entry.

  • A better prepared workforce will enhance economic development efforts.


 

Investment Option: Endowment for Student Success

Goal: To maximize human potential and community quality of life

Investment Strategy: Midlands Technical College will develop educational programs and delivery methods that provide expanded opportunities and options to traditional and nontraditional students. MTC will establish a $1 million endowment to expand opportunities for student success.  These funds will primarily support innovative distance learning technologies, flexible curricula and teaching modules, but will also fund support services for students. Examples of such support services include programs designed to upgrade basic skills through developmental and general education; counseling, tutoring and job placement programs; and small grants to offset the costs of child care while attending classes. The endowment for student success would explicitly support educational options and access for the following three sectors of the community:      

  • The emerging workforce, consisting of students already in school preparing for careers

  • Workers in transition, those who are out of the education or employment environment

  • The existing workforce, particularly individuals who may be underemployed or lacking technical skills.

Benefits: 

Current career and technical programs and courses will be revised to reflect updated workforce needs and relevant job skills.

 

  • A greater diversity of programs will become available for a larger number of students.

  • Technical scholars programs will link students with sponsoring investing companies and students will receive on-the-job experience while attending college.

The success rates of students successfully completing academic coursework will increase due to appropriate delivery methods that are conducive to diverse student skills, abilities and interests.
